Melody’s angry, her cheeks red and her jaw set.
I need her to see this.
My hands feel clumsy on my phone while I search for the video. It’s been a couple years, but it doesn’t take much time at all to find it. I haven’t taken a lot of pictures since Melody left. What would I want to capture, other than the odd gorgeous sunrise at Bliss Ranch and some of the things I found at auctions?
Melody crosses her arms over her chest, and she looks so vulnerable and beautiful and strong that I want to kiss her again. Devour her again. I want to taste all the things I missed about her.
But I shake it off and step around to her side, keeping the most distance I can between us. It’s about six inches. It feels like a mile. “Look at this.”
I play the video and Melody leans closer on instinct. It’s not the greatest video—like I said, I’m not the kind of guy who spends all my time being an amateur videographer on my phone. The clip starts out shaky, showing a view of a round table at the edge of a bar. We get a shot of my napkin and my beer, and then the camera swings up and points at the stage.
“What is this?” she breathes.
The video answers her question. Melody is the first band member out on the stage. The lights wash her out and then the phone adjusts so it can capture the video, and they dive right into the first song of the night.
It takes my breath away all over again.
She’s fearless, she’s talented, she’s singing her heart out. The Melody in the video was only beginning her career as a singer. She was about to be a shooting star.
“I came to that bar because I thought you might change your mind.” My throat closes, so tight I have to swallow several times to keep speaking. “I thought that if you saw me, you might want to come. I never knew how it was with the band until the moment you guys started playing. This moment. And then—”
Then my heart had shattered, scattering itself on the floor like so much broken glass.
“Then I knew I couldn’t ask that from you. I couldn’t put myself between you and your dreams. How could I have ever forgiven myself for that? If you’d left those people behind and come home for what—for me? No. I wouldn’t have it. I slipped out before you had a chance to see me, and I came back home. I thought I was setting you free, Melody.”
She’s silent, her face lit up by the glow of my screen, and her big blue eyes swing up to meet mine. “I never knew you came. To any of my shows, much less the first one.”
“Well, I was wrong. I thought all those city people wouldn’t be a good match for you. I didn’t think you’d be happy with them, and I was wrong. I was dead wrong.
